The Story Behind the SquidFish Flip Jig™

For Palmarius founder Dan Harley, the inspiration behind the SquidFish Flip Jig™ goes back many years to a fishing trip in Costa Rica.

Like many offshore anglers, Dan had spent years chasing tuna, roosterfish, amberjack, cubera snapper, grouper, and countless other species on every type of metal jig imaginable. Most worked. Some worked exceptionally well. But every once in a while, a lure comes along that leaves a lasting impression.

That day fishing off Costa Rica, Dan was introduced to an unusual jig unlike anything he had seen before. One side resembled a squid. The other side resembled a baitfish. It looked strange. Almost gimmicky.

Then the fishing started.

That afternoon, Dan landed more than 17 fish on that single jig, including multiple hard-fighting pelagics, reef predators, groupers and snappers. Fish after fish continued to attack the lure, even after repeated battles and obvious signs of wear.

The reason became apparent quickly.

Depending on how the jig fluttered, one moment it looked like a fleeing baitfish. The next moment it resembled an fleeing squid. Two of the ocean's most important food sources were represented in a single lure.

Predators simply couldn't ignore it.

Years later, the memory of that jig never left.

The concept was brilliant, but Dan believed it could be improved using modern materials and lessons learned from decades of fishing around the world.
